Carlos Santana Presents Blues at Montreux 2004
New York, NY (September 14, 2006)—In the biggest and most ambitious blues installment yet of Eagle Vision’s critically-acclaimed “Live At Montreux” series, a massive three-DVD set—Carlos Santana Presents Blues At Montreux 2004—will be released on October 17. This has to be looked upon as one of the great blues “events” of the year as Bobby Parker, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown and Buddy Guy each get their own DVD…with Carlos Santana acting as Musical Director and Lead Guitarist, and Chic’s Nile Rodgers jamming and performing like you’ve never heard him before.
Bobby Parker is a DC-based bluesman who, in the 1950s, played rock’n’roll guitar behind Bo Diddley, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson and The Everly Brothers. He’s been recording and touring ever since on a variety of labels, having cut some seminal blues sides like “Blues Get Off My Shoulder,” “Watch Your Step” and “It’s Hard To Be Fair.” His 11-song set includes three with Carlos: “Chill Out,” “Mellow Down Easy,” ending with his biggest hit, “Watch Your Step.”
The late Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown kept rockin’ into his 80s with a wide swath of music in his purview. The violinist/guitarist veered from Western Swing to Blues to Jazz to Rock in a heartbeat. There were no musical boundaries for this titan. His disc is a 10-song kaleidoscope, criss-crossing Louisiana Bayou boogie, a wild jam on Muddy Waters’ “I’ve Got My Mojo Workin’” with Santana and Buddy Guy, and a set-ending “Okie Dokie Stomp” with Santana and Nile Rodgers.
Buddy Guy is one of the last of a dying breed. He’s the current king of the Chicago bluesmen, having learned from Muddy himself as well as Howling Wolf, Guitar Slim and Willie Dixon. His frenetic latter-day rock wildness is a direct descendent of the days when performers had to do something—anything!—to get the attention of brawling boozing bar patrons who would just as soon hit you over the head with a broken bottle than ask for an encore. Guy is, arguably, the most electrifying blues performer the genre has ever seen. His set is heightened by a kick-out-the-jams mentality that includes all of the aforementioned musicians!
