NEW YORK, June 10, 2005) -- Eagle Rock Entertainment, the leading independent source for high quality music audio/visual programming, will release Niacin Live in Tokyo! on DVD on June 28, 2005.
The trio of master-class musicians— bassist Billy Sheehan, keyboardist John Novello and drummer Dennis Chambers— storm through a high octane set in front of a rapturous audience at the Blue Note in Tokyo in 1997. Filmed in high definition, the DVD features stereo, 5.1 surround and DTS audio and includes the trio’s covers of Weather Report’s “Birdland” and Vanilla Fudge’s “You Keep Me Hangin’ On.”
After a career that found him lauded justifiably as the most virtuosic bassist of the 1980s, first as the leader of Talas and followed by his stint in the David Lee Roth Band with guitarist Steve Vai and as the leader of hard rockers Mr. Big, Billy Sheehan formed Niacin in the mid 90s. The trio updated the Hammond organ-centric “soul jazz” sound associated with jazz great Jimmy Smith, and was immediately acclaimed for its combination of fiery soloing with bottomless pit-deep grooves.
Chambers is very simply one of the most accomplished drummers of the past twenty years, having played with jazz-fusion greats John McLaughlin, George Duke, and Stanley Clarke, as well as with George Clinton’s P-Funk All Stars. Novello is a first call keyboardist throughout the jazz-fusion community.
Each musician contributes startling pyrotechnic solos, but soulful group cohesion is paramount throughout the gig. Most tunes are culled from the trio’s debut released that year, although the thorough walloping they give Weather Report’s “Birdland” and Vanilla Fudge’s arrangement of the Supremes’ “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” are not to be missed.
