NEW YORK, June 10, 2005 -- Eagle Rock Entertainment, the leading independent source for high quality music audio/visual programming, will release Overtime from Lee Ritenour, a two-disc live recording/concert encompassing material from his 30-plus years as a consummate guitarist and bandleader on DVD on June 28, 2005.
Recorded in 5.1 Surround sound and discrete stereo and filmed in hi-definition video over two days in a Burbank California studio, Overtime showcases the width and and breadth of Ritenour’s career. The songs are culled from 1977's Captain Fingers, 1978's Captain's Journey, 1981's smooth Rit, 1988’s Festival, 1992's Wes Bound, and 2003's Twist Of Motown.
Known as “Captain Fingers,” Ritenour has been at the forefront of contemporary jazz since the early 70s. Whether contributing ingenious parts on over 3,000 sessions for the likes of the Mamas and the Papas, Tony Bennett and Lena Horne, setting the pace for the 70s fusion scene, crafting cool improvisations in the mode of Miles Davis and guitar great Wes Montgomery, contributing to the fusion super-group Fourplay, or exploring Brazilian music, Ritenour’s individuality and resourcefulness shines through.
The best selling contemporary artist and Grammy winner (1985, for Harlequin with Dave Grusin) is accompanied by a who’s who of contemporary jazz, all of whom have played with the guitarist over the years: pianist Dave Grusin, Brazilian singer-songwriter Ivan Lins, keyboardist Patrice Rushen, drummer Harvey Mason, reeds player Ernie Watts, and bassist Anthony Jackson. More recent collaborators on hand include trumpet star Chris Botti and vocalist Kenya Hathaway, daughter of soul great Donny.
“Rit” and company revisit selections from his catalog: not only is his storied “hot licks” showcase “Captain Fingers” given a fiery reading, but the Temptation’s “Papa Was A Rolling Stone” and Miles Davis’ “Blue in Green” are each essayed with sly verve. Interviews with Ritenour and his accompanists are interspersed between performances.
Overtime is not only a must for his fans, but a view into the varied musical experiences that have rendered Ritenour one of the most accomplished and beloved artists in contemporary jazz.
