Nine Hundred Nights

New York, NY - This February, Eagle Rock Entertainment presents Nine Hundred Nights , the story of the brief reign of the pivotal 60's psychedelic rock group Big Brother and the Holding Co., on DVD. The DVD follows the band from their formation in 1965, through the arrival of Janis Joplin in mid-1966, their first two albums in 1967 and 1968, and on to Joplin's departure in 1969. The program contains classic footage of the band performing live on TV and in concert (including footage from their historic performance at the Monterey Pop Festival), interviews with the members of the band and their contemporaries, and rarely seen rehearsal and studio performances. Nine Hundred Nights will be available on DVD February 24, 2004 through Eagle Rock Entertainment .

Bonus features include unedited live performances of "Down On Me," "The Coo Coo," "Ball And Chain" and "Piece of My Heart" as well as a rare audio recording of "Hall of the Mountain King." Other bonuses include a discography of albums and videos, a photo gallery, a biographical time line of key points from 1965 to 1969 and interview outtakes.

Peter Albin, James Gurley, Sam Andrew and Chuck Jones (who was replaced by Dave Getz in 1966) formed Big Brother and the Holding Co. in San Francisco in 1965. In 1966, they decided to add a female vocalist to the band, since other San Francisco groups had found success with this format, and found Janis Joplin, who proved to be an invaluable addition. The band released their self-titled first album in 1967. Their legendary performance at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival catapulted the band into the national spotlight and led to a contract with Columbia Records, who released their second album, Cheap Thrills, in 1968. Joplin left the band in 1969, but Big Brother continued until 1972. Andrew, Gurley, Albin and Getz reunited in 1987 and the band released a new studio album in 1999, Do What You Love.

Although they will always be remembered as the band who launched the career of Janis Joplin , Big Brother also occupies a significant place in the history of San Francisco psychedelia in their own right.

Nine Hundred Nights is an absolute must for any Janis Joplin fan, with some of her most scintillating performances caught on film. It is also a brilliant snapshot of the psychedelic era of the late 60's.
